Galloway, N.J. – For several years, the ShopRite LPGA Classic has been a staple event in Galloway, N.J., drawing in a decorated field, thousands of fans, and media from all over the world. Along with the excitement and competition, one volunteer in particular has quietly played a critical role in ensuring the tournament's smooth operation behind the scenes within the media center: Armand Piraino of N.J.
Piraino has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, sun up to sun down, managing media logistics and ensuring that the journalists, photographers, and reporters have everything they need to cover the tournament. From setting up the media center, checking people in, printing daily reports, transcripts and tee sheets to name a few, his efforts have helped to provide a seamless media center flow and enhanced the overall experience for the visiting media guests from around the world.
Piraino’s journey with the ShopRite LPGA Classic began 25 years ago, driven by a love for golf and a desire to contribute to the community. Piraino saw an ad in the newspaper and eagerly placed a call. What started as a call for information turned into a small piece of LPGA history.
“I started out as a gofer [someone who runs errands], running all around,” Piraino chuckled. “But then when they were short a man in the media center I stepped up and been here ever since. They asked if I wanted to be chairman, and the ad was never posted again.”
What began as a simple volunteer role quickly evolved into a vital position amongst the volunteers, with his responsibilities growing each year. Armond's drive and dedication have made him a trusted figure among the media professionals who cover the tournament.
Piraino’s role extends beyond logistics. He has built relationships with some players, media members, and the tournament staff, becoming a familiar and friendly face that everyone looks forward to seeing each year. His ability to anticipate the needs of the media and handle any issues that arise with grace and efficiency has earned him widespread respect and admiration across the board.
One of the highlights of Piraino’s volunteer experience has been witnessing the tournament's growth and evolution.
"Each year, the ShopRite LPGA Classic gets bigger and better. We lost the Miss America Pageant a while back, so to have the ShopRite is great for the community and for the town,” said Piraino. “From a golf standpoint, the field is getting younger and the scores are getting lower… it’s amazing.”
Despite getting to witness firsthand the evolution of the event, the behind-the-scenes moments top all others for Piraino.
“Jeremy, [Tournament Media Director] invited me to Media day, I've never been before. What a treat that was. I got to meet so many people.” expressed Piraino. “I also one year got a signed flag from Brittany Lincicome and even got a few minutes to chat, those are my favorite memories by far.”
What makes Piraino’s story even more remarkable is that this is his only vacation time all year. When not dedicating his time to the tournament, he works at the Hard Rock Casino. Each year, he brings a special touch to the media center by gifting everyone with mementos from the casino—dice and decks of cards. This thoughtful gesture has become a beloved tradition, with the media center staff eagerly looking forward to these tokens of appreciation.
Piraino’s dedication is well-recognized among the media center staff. Everyone knows him by name, and even if someone forgets, they surely remember his friendly face. His presence is a constant reminder of the camaraderie and community spirit that define the ShopRite LPGA Classic.
“Man, this is so special,” Piraino said bashfully. “I guess my reputation precedes me.”
As the tournament approaches once again, Piraino is ready to dive into his duties with the same enthusiasm and dedication as always. For him, it's not just about the work; it's about being a part of something special, contributing to a beloved event, and ensuring that the stories of the tournament are told in the best possible way – and a vacation away from work.
His story is a reminder that behind every successful event are dedicated individuals whose hard work and passion make it all possible. Piraino, the Media Chair Volunteer, is one such unsung hero, whose contributions have played a significant role in the continued success and growth of the ShopRite LPGA Classic and will continue for years to come.
